People in Nepal are using Facebook to let loved ones know they're safe
YESTERDAY, NEPAL was devastated by a massive earthquake which has killed more than 2,000 people so far.
But there has been some relief for people worried about loved ones in the country – those located within the disaster area can mark themselves as ‘safe’ using Facebook.
The social networking site introduced the Safety Check feature last year, but this seems to be the first time it has been used on a large scale.
According to Buzzfeed, the feature activates when a person has the area listed on their profile, or has recently used the internet there – then it sends them a notification asking if they are safe.
If they are, the message is sent to all of their Facebook friends. People can also mark their Facebook friends as ‘safe’ if they are unable to do it to themselves.
Many people have praised the feature, which has been comforting friends and families of those affected by the earthquake, including people who are far from the disaster site.
